Giving Up

Give up
Numbers do not lie
Give up
Why do you even try?
Give up
Admit that you were wrong
Give up
You've fooled yourself for far too long
Give up
It's true what you have feared
Give up
Your words are nothing anyone wants to hear
Give up
You tried, but you have failed
Give up
Others have prevailed
Give up
It's time to admit defeat
Give up
You never will succeed

Give up?
You're right, it is absurd
Give up?
But I refuse to know the meaning of those words

  1. You didn’t really say why you are discouraged, but I suspect it has somthing to go w/ comments on your posts given your reference to numbers. If so, I get it. I wrote 43 comments yesterday and strive to comment on 10-20 posts a day. I don’t get anywhere near reciprocity. I finally had to remind myself that slicing is about my writing goals. I find the whole community angle a bit contrived and very much overstated, w/ a couple exceptions. This is all to say, I appreciate your honesty and the way you capture my own thoughts.

    1. I totally agree that the purpose is to further our own writing goals. That is the reason I persevere. I feel better when I am actively writing every day, and I love the challenge of doing so when there are so many other things demanding my attention. I'll admit this poem was not written by the rational side of me. It was purely emotional. Thank you for taking the time to read and comment. It is greatly appreciated!

  2. I want to think we all hit a wall at some point during this challenge - whether it be due to not finding the right inspiration, or lack of comments on that post you truly loved. It takes a lot to continue on and yes I have to remember it's all about personal growth on writing.

  3. This is a big commitment. Between single parenting, finishing up a second graduate certificate, training for a half marathon and slicing, it's often the last thing I want to do when my child is happing or finally gone to sleep but does it make me a better person, does it make me notice and name things that I want to be more meta about, does it make me write which is something that sparks joy? Keep on keeping on.

  4. Don't listen to the little voice asking you to give up. The feeling is natural though and it visits almost everyone. I wonder what do you define as a success for yourself. I have found that even showing up and writing a short slice is worth a celebration for me.

  5. I wonder if it's the climb inherent in day 10? 20 more days seems sooo many. I burned myself out a bit with the comment challenge. Taking care of two little ones, reports and 60 comments was a little much for me. Keep going! I like that you added to ? in the last two lines.
