What You Didn't Know

What you didn't know
was there was a time
I thought you'd never be

I could see you in my mind
Blond hair, blue eyes
Hands clapping, your laughter ringing out

But my arms were empty

So many days
lost in despair
afraid you'd never come

A roller coaster
of highs and lows,
promises and disappointments

Twists and turns
that kept me endlessly guessing

It wasn't supposed to be this way
It wasn't supposed to be so hard

I watched in isolation
as others obtained
what I ached for

I turned away
my tortured eyes
so they would not have to see

The jealous storm
that brewed inside me

What I didn't know
was someday I'd forget
all the pain, the frustration, the tears

That those days of agony
would be swallowed up
by the murky waters of the past

Impossible now to believe they ever existed

For here you are in front of me
Blond hair, blue eyes
Face smiling, your laughter ringing out

And my heart is full

This poem took us through the high and lows. And the happiness at the end made me smile.

  2. Wow, this is gorgeous! Your images and language so clearly convey all of your emotions. I was so happy for the turn and of course the aptness of that line: "Impossible now to believe they ever existed."
